Nevado Salkantay Climb 6,264m 6D/5N (Very Difficult)

The Great Apu Salkantay is one of the hardest mountains to climb in the region. The route to base camp crosses two passes, one at Incachillaska (5,100m) and the other at Abra Palqay (4,700m) on the eastern side of the mountain. Just crossing Abra Paljay is the base camp to climb Salkantay. The easiest route on the mountain is the NE ridge, but it still quite difficult and presents 1,000m of steep, exposed climbing mostly around 70 but there are several steeper sections of 80 - 90. Salkantay is for mountaineers who want a challenge and wish to climb the most sacred of the Andean summits.

Full Day Rock Climbing

This is a perfect day activity for larger groups. Half an hour outside of Cusco, close to Cachimayo, We had been putting up routes on a small rock tower about 40 meters high. As of now the tower has a few bolted routes and several top rope routes, but the potential of the area has only begun to be explored. There is easily another 40 routes that could be climbed. The wall has a nicely sized cave for climbing or relaxing out of the sun and there are very good bouldering sites all around.

Cerro Soray Climb 5,446m 3D/2N (Medium)

Cerro Soray is located just 4km west of Soray Pampa, the starting point for the treks that pass by Nevado Salkantay on the way to Machu Picchu. Although the peak is not very high, it seems so because of the topographical prominence of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. The valleys surrounding the mountain are very low, for example the Apurimac River 12km to the south is only at 2,000m above sea level. The climb is for the most part technically easy and accessible. The crux of the route is the final 180 meters of rock ridge with steep exposure on both sides. The summit has spectacular views of all the surrounding mountains including Salkantay. The peak can be combined with any of the treks to Machu Picchu and can be used as an acclimatization peak before attempting to climb Nevado Salkantay.

Nevado Maria Haumantita (aka Jampa) 5,500m 4D/3N (Medium)

Jampa is the easiest mountain in The Cordillera Vilcanota and may be climbed without experience in mountaineering. It requires a technical glacier hike and sometimes a small rock climbing pass depending on the season. The summit offers a panoramic view that reaches to Salkantay over 130km to the NW.
